What to Do if You Can’t Seem to Land a Job Interview


Job hunting is something that no one truly enjoys, but it’s also something that everyone will have to do from time to time. There is so much pressure associated with the entire process, and the disappointment you feel when you are not offered a job you were excited about can be devastating. This is especially true for those who just can’t seem to get a foot in the door for an interview.

There are a number of reasons why you might not be offered an interview for a job you are after. Unfortunately, you might be completely unaware of some key mistake that you might be making. Here are a couple of things that you should evaluate if you have been unable thus far to land an interview for a job that you are after.

Look at Your Resume


Your opportunity to make a good first impression on a hiring manager at a company will live and die with your resume. Start by considering the amount of time and effort you put into crafting your resume. This is a process that will take much more time than one would initially think. A hiring manager will be able to instantly identify a resume that was simply thrown together without much thought, so make sure that you put in the time that is required.

A resume should include all the relevant information about your professional career that would pertain to the job you are applying to. It should also have that information formatted using a clean yet interesting resume template. In using such a template, you not only seem professional, but you increase your chances of standing out from the crowd and, thus, landing an interview.

Other things to watch out for include spelling mistakes and errors in punctuation. Such things can be deal-breakers for most hiring managers as they make a candidate seem unprofessional and careless. Make sure that your resume is tailored to the company you are applying to as well, since this adds a level of detail that a hiring manager will certainly appreciate.

Follow Up


While there are some companies out there that discourage candidates from following up about the status of a resume, there are more that are perfectly ok with it. In fact, by sending an email or even making a call to see if there is any more information you can provide that will aid in their selection process, you can demonstrate a positive eagerness to be considered for the position.

Avoid calling right away as you want to give the person in charge of the hiring process enough time to have taken a look at your application and resume. Start your email or call with an offer to provide further information or answer any questions about your experience and qualifications. Keep things brief and succinct so as to not take up too much of their time. You should always end with a simple reiteration of your eagerness to be considered and your willingness to make any necessary clarifications regarding your resume.
