In using such a template, you not only seem professional, but you increase your chances of standing out from the crowd and, thus, landing an interview.
Other things to watch out for include spelling mistakes and errors in punctuation. Such things can be deal-breakers for most hiring managers as they make a candidate seem unprofessional and careless. While there are some companies out there that discourage candidates from following up about the status of a resume, there are more that are perfectly ok with it.
